A lock problem is rarely only a lock problem. It is a door that swells shut in a damp week, a key that snapped on a cold morning, a tenant who left without handing anything back. In Gosport we listen first, explain the options, and do tidy work you can see before we drive off. This page also covers Presqu'ile Point.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 38 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 38% of homes in Brighton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In neighbourhoods with a mix of older and newer homes, the finishes on the doors vary widely: aged brass, satin nickel, matte black. A locksmith serving such an area keeps a range of finishes so replacement hardware suits each house.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 88% of homes in Brighton (2021 Census).Where homes are mostly detached, patio and sliding doors deserve attention alongside the hinged ones. Auxiliary locks, pin locks and better latches for sliders are routine additions that a locksmith brings on the same visit as the front door work.

The call
The deadbolt is a stiff double-cylinder model that needs a key from both sides, and in the dark hallway finding it is a nuisance. You want a thumb-turn inside, a keypad outside, and a door that locks itself behind you.

You've just moved in, and the mailbox compartment in the lobby came with a single key the previous owner mailed back separately, or never handed over at all. As far as anyone can tell, the lock still answers to a stranger's key.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

This group covers cylinders and deadbolts built to resist picking, bumping and drilling, strikes fastened into the framing, and patented key systems where every copy is authorised and recorded. We assess the whole door first, then recommend the level that fits.

    High Security Locks

A colleague showed you a video of a lock being opened with a bump key in a few seconds. Then you went home and noticed your own deadbolt is the same style, bought at a hardware store a decade ago.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The century home's original mortise lock takes a key the size of a spoon, sticks in humid weather and has worn its strike to a groove. You want a lock that works every day without giving up the old door.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

You moved in three weeks ago. The previous owner left a handful of keys, none labelled, and the bolt on the side door rattles in its housing.

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The shop's aluminum door has a bent meeting stile and the hookbolt is jammed half out. The alarm did its job and the display is untouched, but the entrance will not close properly and opening time is hours away.

Short answers to common questions

Will I need a whole new lock?

Usually not. Most jammed locks are saved by cleaning the cylinder, fitting a small part such as a tailpiece or spring, or adjusting the door so the bolt has room. A new cylinder is fitted when the plug or shell is corroded through or twisted by forcing, matched to your finish and, where possible, pinned to your current key. A complete new lockset is usually a choice you make rather than a requirement, though some internal failures cannot be serviced in place and call for a full replacement.

Do I need a hub or a bridge?

Only if the model you choose uses one to reach the internet. Some locks have Wi-Fi built into the interior unit and connect straight to your router. Others save battery by using Bluetooth at the door and a small plug-in bridge nearby to relay to the network. Locks designed for a home hub join whatever hub you already run. The locksmith checks signal strength at the door itself and recommends the arrangement that keeps the lock reliably connected.

Can several compartments in the same panel be done in one visit?

Yes, this is common when a property manager notices several compartments failing around the same time. Each one is still confirmed against the resident or unit it belongs to, and the work moves compartment by compartment. Unless a resident asks otherwise, each lock is keyed separately from the others, and the visit closes with a simple list of which compartment received which lock and keys.

Can a safe hold both cash and paper documents at the same time?

Yes, though it is worth knowing the interior conditions suited to each are slightly different. Paper gains real heat protection from a fire-rated lining, but that same sealed lining traps humidity, so paper stored inside needs the same periodic airing and a desiccant packet as any fire-rated interior. Cash and other valuables mainly need the tool resistance of the body and door and tolerate the sealed environment more easily. A single well-chosen unit can hold both together without conflict, particularly with paper kept in a sealed folder or bag inside.
