Locksmith in SmithfieldOne key
for every door

Houses in Smithfield collect locks over the years: a front door from one decade, a side entry from another, a garage door that takes its own key. We rekey them all to a single key so the ring in your pocket finally gets lighter, and set up a spare that lives somewhere sensible.

Get your Smithfield locks changed properly

Winter is part of how we work in Smithfield. Doors swell and shrink, frames shift, keys snap in cold cylinders, and salt finds its way into hardware. We choose lubricants that stay fluid in the cold, set strikes with the seasons in mind, and show you the small habit that stops a key from freezing in the lock.

Shop rules

Locksmithing without the drama.

  1. Identity checked, politely. For openings and key work we confirm you have the right to be there. We explain why we ask, and we ask everyone.
  2. Work you can watch. There is nothing hidden about what we do. Stand beside us, ask questions, and we will show you what the lock looks like inside.
  3. Clean hands, clean floor. We put down a mat where there is drilling, wipe the hardware down and leave the area as we found it, only with a working lock.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Call about rekeying your new home.

How a visit goes

Commercial doors work harder than residential ones: hundreds of cycles a day, a closer slamming the latch, deliveries propping the back door open in the cold. We specify hardware for that duty, keep closers adjusted so the door actually latches behind people…

    Call and describe the door

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

    On our way

Outdoor locks live a harder life. We check the gate alignment, the exposure to rain and freezing, and how it is used before recommending hardware.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 38 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 38% of homes in Brighton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.A mix of eras means a mix of bores and backsets. Standard modern sizes on one door, older dimensions on the door across the street. Carrying adapter plates and cylinders in both ranges lets a locksmith fit upgrades cleanly to either.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 88% of homes in Brighton (2021 Census).Where the housing is mostly single houses, the door into the house from an attached garage is easy to overlook because it feels indoors. It is still an exterior door, and a proper deadbolt there is a sensible, low-fuss upgrade.

Short answers to common questions

I am a landlord. Can you open a unit my tenant is living in?

A locksmith will want to understand the situation first, because a tenant's right to their home is protected and a lockout of a tenant is something only a sheriff enforcing a Landlord and Tenant Board order may carry out. Legitimate reasons do come up: a tenant has asked you to let them in, a vacated unit needs securing, or an emergency requires access. Bring ownership records and be ready to explain the circumstances, and the locksmith will help you handle it properly.

The key snapped off inside the lock. What happens now?

The broken blade is removed with extractors that grip it and draw it out toward the face, then the cylinder is opened normally. Keys rarely break in a healthy lock, so the cylinder is cleaned, the cam behind it checked for stiffness, and a dry lubricant applied. A new key is cut from the code or from the two pieces rather than from a worn spare, since a tired copy is usually what broke.

Is it worth repairing an old mortise lock instead of replacing it?

Usually, yes. The mechanisms are simple and robust, and what fails is nearly always a spring, dried grease or wear on one part, all of which are repairable on a bench. Replacing the lock with a modern cylindrical set means boring a large hole through the door stile and filling the old pocket, which is more work and changes the door for good. A rebuilt case keeps the original trim and keeps the door intact.

Our property has a lot of separate gates. Is there a way to manage that with fewer keys?

Yes, a master key arrangement is a common answer: individual gates each keep their own key for day-to-day use, while one additional master key opens all of them for whoever manages the whole property, such as an owner or a maintenance contractor. Setting this up means recombining or replacing the cylinders involved so they share a compatible pinning structure, which is planned out before any single gate's lock is touched, so the system works as intended once finished.
