Short answers to common questions

Illustrative locksmith scene; not an actual job — Home Lockout Service, Cobourg

Lockout Services

I am a landlord. Can you open a unit my tenant is living in?

A locksmith will want to understand the situation first, because a tenant's right to their home is protected and a lockout of a tenant is something only a sheriff enforcing a Landlord and Tenant Board order may carry out. Legitimate reasons do come up: a tenant has asked you to let them in, a vacated unit needs securing, or an emergency requires access. Bring ownership records and be ready to explain the circumstances, and the locksmith will help you handle it properly. Home Lockout Service

The key snapped off inside the lock. What happens now?

The broken blade is removed with extractors that grip it and draw it out toward the face, then the cylinder is opened normally. Keys rarely break in a healthy lock, so the cylinder is cleaned, the cam behind it checked for stiffness, and a dry lubricant applied. A new key is cut from the code or from the two pieces rather than from a worn spare, since a tired copy is usually what broke. Business Lockout Service

Is a broken key a sign the whole lock is worn out?

Sometimes, and the visit answers it. A key that failed from its own fatigue in a clean, smooth cylinder says nothing against the lock. A key that broke because the pins were worn flat, the cap had loosened or the keyway was full of grit says the cylinder needs a service or a rekey. One that broke in a corroded, pitted plug is telling you the lock is due for replacement. Broken Key Extraction

What should I have ready when I call about a break-in?

Whether the police have been called and any occurrence number; whether everyone is safe and the property is empty of intruders; which opening was forced and whether it closes at all; whether the damage is to the lock, the frame, the door or the glass; whether keys, remotes or codes were taken; whether you own, rent or manage the property; and whether there is glass beside the door. Photos on your phone help the locksmith bring the right hardware. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

What happens to my old keys?

They become ordinary pieces of brass. Once the cylinders are pinned to the new combination, the old keys turn nothing on your property, so there is no security reason to keep or hide them. Hand them to the locksmith for disposal or drop them in the metal recycling. If a former roommate or contractor still has one, it no longer matters, which is the whole reason for the visit. Keep only the new set, counted and tagged. Lock Rekeying

How long does a deadbolt installation take?

A replacement into existing holes is generally the shorter visit, and boring a fresh door with a new strike takes longer, roughly an hour or two per door including the frame work and testing. Steel doors, keying alike, frame repairs after a forced entry and fitting a jamb reinforcer each add time. The locksmith can give a realistic estimate once the door and frame have been looked at. Deadbolt Installation

My old house has a mortise lock. Can it take modern hardware?

Often the original case can be kept and given a new cylinder and strike, which keeps the period look and the old door intact. Where the case is beyond service, a filler or conversion plate covers the mortise pocket and lets a cylindrical deadbolt or knob set be fitted without cutting into the door's stile. The locksmith looks at the door before recommending either path, since old doors vary a great deal. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Is it worth repairing an old mortise lock instead of replacing it?

Usually, yes. The mechanisms are simple and robust, and what fails is nearly always a spring, dried grease or wear on one part, all of which are repairable on a bench. Replacing the lock with a modern cylindrical set means boring a large hole through the door stile and filling the old pocket, which is more work and changes the door for good. A rebuilt case keeps the original trim and keeps the door intact. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

High Security Locks

Can you open a safe used to store firearms?

Yes, the opening itself proceeds the same way as for any other safe. Afterward, for a business, it is worth confirming the storage arrangement still meets the applicable federal requirements for secure firearms storage, since those cover the container, the surrounding room and who has access, separately from whatever caused the lock to need attention. Safe Opening & Combination Change

Can a safe hold both cash and paper documents at the same time?

Yes, though it is worth knowing the interior conditions suited to each are slightly different. Paper gains real heat protection from a fire-rated lining, but that same sealed lining traps humidity, so paper stored inside needs the same periodic airing and a desiccant packet as any fire-rated interior. Cash and other valuables mainly need the tool resistance of the body and door and tolerate the sealed environment more easily. A single well-chosen unit can hold both together without conflict, particularly with paper kept in a sealed folder or bag inside. Safe Installation & Servicing

Can a high security cylinder be rekeyed later?

Yes. Like any pin tumbler it can be repinned to a new combination by a locksmith who holds the system, so a departed employee's key can be retired without replacing hardware. Some lines use interchangeable cores that swap in moments with a control key, which suits businesses with frequent turnover. Rekeying stays within your registered keyway, so the key control you paid for continues after the change. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks

Can the work be done while we are open?

Yes, and many businesses prefer it. The locksmith works one door at a time, finishing and testing each before starting the next, and leaves the main entrance until a quiet moment or until after closing. Doors staff are using are done last and their new keys are handed over first. Where a business would rather nobody sees the work, an early morning or after-hours window is arranged instead. How does a master key system work in a shared or multi-tenant building?

A tenant's own hierarchy for their suite is designed and held separately from the building's shared systems, such as a condominium corporation's lobby or garage keying or a landlord's building-wide master. The two sit alongside each other rather than merging, so a tenant's private levels stay private while common areas continue to answer to whoever already manages them. Master Key System Design

Can access control be added to just one door, or does it have to cover the whole building?

A single door with its own standalone reader is a complete installation on its own, and plenty of businesses start there. If more doors need controlling later, a networked controller can be added at that point, or the building can simply add another standalone unit. Nothing about starting small commits the business to expanding, and nothing about a single-door job rules out growing the system later. Access Control Installation

Is delayed-egress hardware allowed here?

Delayed-egress locking has a defined place in the codes that cover it, generally paired with sprinkler protection and a fire alarm system, and it is not a way to lock a door indefinitely; a short delay still releases on its own once the push is held, and always releases as soon as a fire alarm signal arrives. Whether it suits a given opening depends on the occupancy and the authority having jurisdiction, so it is confirmed with them before it is specified. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys

There is a dog inside and the car is getting hot. Who do I call?

Call 911, and the provincial animal protection line if you cannot reach the owner; the province asks the public to report animals left in hot or cold vehicles rather than break glass themselves. Police and animal welfare inspectors have authority to enter a vehicle for an animal in distress. A locksmith can attend as well, and if you are the owner, the same careful opening gets you and the dog reunited with the car undamaged. Car Lockout Service

Can a key be made for an older car with no chip?

Yes, for a vehicle that genuinely has no immobilizer, checked by VIN and equipment rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer and coded key. Where that is the case, it is the simplest key work there is: a blade cut to the factory code from the VIN or to a reading of the door lock, rather than copied from a worn original. If the ignition has become sloppy, the locksmith can rebuild it in the same visit. Car Key Replacement

What is the difference between a transponder key and a smart key?

A transponder key still has a blade you insert into the ignition, with a chip in the head that the immobilizer checks once it is turned. A smart or proximity key usually stays in a pocket or bag; the vehicle senses it nearby, unlocks the doors, and starts with a push button rather than a turned key. Both rely on the same underlying idea, an electronic identity the vehicle recognizes, delivered in different ways. Spare Car Key Duplication

How do I know if my fob just needs a new battery?

A fob that has gone quiet, but whose mechanical blade still opens the door normally, is very often a battery rather than a programming problem. A fresh coin-cell battery, sized to what that fob calls for, is worth trying before assuming anything electronic has failed. If a new battery changes nothing, the fault sits somewhere else in the fob or the vehicle's memory. Key Fob Programming
