- The call
- Your purse was taken from the back of a chair at a restaurant. The cards can be cancelled by phone tonight, but the house keys were in the side pocket beside a driver's licence that shows exactly where those keys fit.

The keys fell out of a gym bag somewhere between the arena and the parking lot. The ring has a tag from the building with the unit number on it.
Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours. Rekeying leaves all of that alone and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the pin stack on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a different key runs it. For hardware in good condition, that is the sensible choice: the door looks and feels as it did while the old key is retired. A worn cylinder can be replaced and keyed to match the rest in the same visit.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey · Orland

Scene 1
The locksmith walks the property with you and tries to think like the key. Front door deadbolt and handle, the back door, a side door, the door between the garage and the house, the shed, a gate padlock, a basement walkout, the door to a storage room or workshop. Each cylinder the missing key fitted goes on a list. Anything it fitted that is not yours to change goes on a second list: a shared lobby door, a parking gate, a community mailbox compartment, a workplace. The first list becomes the scope of the visit; the second becomes a set of calls you can make with the locksmith's help while the work goes on.
Scene 2
On a conventional pin-tumbler cylinder, with it on the bench, the plug is turned slightly and a follower is slid in behind it so the springs and top pins stay in the housing rather than scattering. The plug comes out and the old bottom pins are tipped away. The new key is cut first, then a pin whose length matches each cut is dropped into the corresponding chamber, checked flush with a gauge, and the loaded plug is guided back under the follower. The plug should turn with a light, even feel and no catch. If it drags on one chamber, that pin is sized again before anything goes back on the door.
Scene 3
The new combination is recorded as a short code, either on a card the locksmith gives you or on the key tag, and a copy stays in the locksmith's job notes if you wish. That code is what makes future copies accurate: a key cut to code has fresh, original depths, while a copy of a worn key inherits every rounded edge. It also means a lost key years from now is met with a different code, never a repeat. Keep the card with the house papers, and when a new key is needed, ask for it to be cut from the code rather than traced from a tired one.

Your suite door is generally the one you can act on, and it may sit on a building master system, so the locksmith plans the rekey so the master still operates while the old change key stops working. Lobby doors, the parking gate, amenity rooms and the mailroom belong to the corporation; report a lost fob or key for those to the property manager, who deactivates or reissues it. The locksmith can help sort which is which.
When the hardware itself is the weak point: a plug worn oval, a cylinder eaten by salt from a driveway-facing door, a light knob lock on an exterior door, a keyway with no blanks left in supply, or when you want a different style, a heavier deadbolt or a keypad. In those cases a new lock keyed to match the rest of the house is fitted in the same visit. Everything else is rekeyed.
The opener on the garage ceiling holds a memory of every remote paired to it, and it can be erased in one step so the lost remote is forgotten. The remotes still in the household are paired again afterwards, and a keypad on the outside of the garage gets a new code if you have one. The locksmith can do this during the visit, and it takes only a few minutes at the opener.
